Winter Exhibition, 2010
Summer Exhibition 2009 The 100th Anniversary exhibition got off to an excellent start with a well-attended Private View on Saturday 1st August. Barry Green, President of the Society, kicked off procedings before introducing the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Terry Hall who addressed the assembled invitees. Leader of the Council, Gerald Vernon-Jackson, delivered a short address before the exhibition was declared formally open. The Lord Mayor selected Andy Housego's acrylic painting 'Beauchene Door' as the first winner of the Lord Mayor's award, sponsored by Hiscock Gallery, Southsea. Both new and established members have contributed to an excellent display this year. Around 590 works were submitted - this must be a record, at least as high in recent years. Every available space has been utilised to ensure that all work is accommodated. The display of large works around the walls far exceeds anything we have displayed before. The variety and quality of work is excellent and a credit to all our members. Congratulations! This year we invited pupils of the Portsmouth Grammar School to participate in a competition. The theme was 'Portsmouth Past and Present'. The winners and commended entries are on display. We congratulate them and thank them for entering. As usual a volunteer army achieved wonders on Thursday and Friday in transporting and setting up the screens and lighting and hanging and displaying work. Thanks to all who contributed (including those who provided food and drinks!). The work doesn't start on the Thursday though, it starts in the weeks and months before with publicity, entry forms, arranging the Private View, collecting and recording entry forms and preparartion of the catalogue. All of this effort invisible to the majority of members but is much appreciated. Members' favourite In addition to the visitors' selection of best exhibit, which follows, Society members have the opportunity to vote for their favourite exhibit. This year members selected the following: In first place Frank Clarke (second year as a winner for Frank) with his beautiful pastel titled 'Girl with Red Hair'. Second and third places were both filled by Jackie Walker with an equal number of votes for two fine watercolours, 'At Rest' and 'The Cellist'. Best Exhibit Each year visitors to the exhibition are given the opportunity to vote for the Best Exhibit. This year's popular winner was Samantha Mackinnon with her dramatic acrylic 'Crocodile Henry's'.Colombina Snow's collage and acrylic 'Provence was in second place with third place being shared by Frank Clarke's pastel 'Girl with Red Hair', Marion Mann's watercolour 'Steps' and Samantha Mackinnon's acrylic 'Out of the Dark and into the Light'. Congratulations to all. Images of the first and second place winners follow. Click on each image to see enlarged version.
