Norman Elford

Norman Elford (1931-2007)
was for many years President of Portsmouth and Hampshire Art Society and a member of the Guild of Railway Artists. He was well known for his detailed and precise paintings of marine and transport subjects in acrylics and oils, many of which are based on local themes. He was educated at Portsmouth Northern Grammar School before studying painting at the Southern College of Art, Portsmouth.

After teaching art in the city for thirty-two years, Norman took up painting full time and had a number of successful one man exhibitions. He exhibited frequently with the Guild, designed decorative plates for Royal Doulton and Spode, produced thirty paintings for railway calendars and completed many private commissions. His prints of local maritime scenes are in many homes and he exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists at the Mall Galleries.
