Working to inspire creativity at Cottage Grove Primary School in Portsmouth

Our Chairman Eve recently took the time to attend an assembly with the 400+ children at Cottage Grove Primary School in Southsea.  The aim of her visit was to tell them about our art society and invite them to participate in an exciting competition we are running.

As an art society, it is important to our committee that we promote creative activity to as much of the community as possible.  We understand the joy of having an artistic practice and so we are delighted to encourage the pupils at Cottage Grove to be inspired and take part.

The competition is entitled ‘What’s important to me?’ and pupils have the opportunity to create a picture with this theme in mind.  All the children’s entries will be displayed on a digital screen throughout our summer exhibition and open studios event.

There will be two prizes for the pupils taking part; one for the upper and one for the lower school.  The winners will be invited to the private view with their families so they may be presented with their prizes.

Eve will be going into the school again to run four art workshops with the year 6 children to help them get some ideas.

Lots of children said they want to enter so we are excited to get the school involved.

PHAS Away Day to the National Gallery in London

Portsmouth & Hampshire Art Society exhibition administrator Penny, recently organised a wonderful away day to the National Gallery in central London.  The trip was enjoyed by all those who attended and allowed members to gain inspiration from the works by master’s on display.

In addition to the incredible collection of work at the National Gallery, there was an additional exhibition of works by Carravaggio which was free so many of our members attending took the time to take in this extra display of artworks.

Some of our members took sketchbooks with them to make visual notes of things they saw. Pictured left is member Trudy Barber with her sketch pad and pencil.

We hope to be able to arrange further away days for our members in the future so if you want to get involved, visit our membership page for details.
